(Local Elections UPDATE) UFS! Another fine Mess! A Laurel and Hardy comedy this ain’t!

Arlin Miller

Like I said above, a comedy this ain’t.  For all of us SAG-AFTRA members it’s more of a tragedy.  And it goes something  like this;

In April 2013, the board was informed of SAG-AFTRA’s over $6 million deficit.  They were told the deficit was the result of several occurrences including a 16-20% drop of members paying their dues, a drop in new joins, the payout expenses to those members of the staff who agreed to a “volunteer separation” and a few other odds and ends.
.
Then at the July 2013 plenary, it was reported that SAG-AFTRA’s costs were $98 million, while revenue was $88 million, which created a $10 million dollar deficit.  So, monies were borrowed  from the unclaimed residual fund and from the unions savings (assets, stock, investments etc…) to make up the difference.  And, here’s the real scary part–a deficit will continue to re-appear if things continue as they are.
.
To top it all off, $1 million dollars were saved after closing around 13 locals (formally known as Branches). As you can imagine that didn’t bring a smile to the board members representing those locals.
.
And you can throw this into the mess, ah, mix,,,SAG-AFTRA staff salaries represent 62% of our expenses each year and the rent is 14%.Well, there you go!  What do we say in LA?
.
Oh, yeah. Have a nice day!

UPDATE: SAG-AFTRA Reveals More Local Election Results

By DOMINIC PATTEN | Thursday August 1, 2013 @ 12:50pm PDTTags: SAG AFTRA

.

UPDATE, 12:50 PM: The SAG-AFTRA local elections results train keeps on rolling and now it has stopped in Chicago. The winners in the union’s Windy City contest were announced today after being tabulated on Wednesday. As with previous results from Miami, Hawaii, Dallas-Ft Worth and the Missouri Valley locals, the results are a combo of unopposed and balloted winners. With 3,687 ballots mailed out and 731 returned, Chicago has the second lowest return rate of the union’s first national election since it merged in the spring of 2012. Only Dallas-Ft Worth was lower with just 18.45% of its mailed out ballots returned compared to Chicago’s 19.83%. More results are expected later this week from other regions. The results of the National officer elections as well as the LA and NY local elections are expected on or just after August 15 once all the returned ballots are in.
