It has been the policy of SAG that your dues dollars will not be used to promote political candidates.
Well, unfortunately that ain’t the case. Now, that’s not exactly your elected leaders fault, but, rather SAG’s policy of sharing offices and staff of AFTRA to the tune of two million bucks a year.
For instance, SAG members’ dues money goes to help pay for the use of AFTRA offices and Staff in Chicago. Part of the deal is a shared AFTRA/sag publications.
It is no secret that AFTRA’s current select leadership is in the back pocket of AFL-CIO’s John Sweeny. It is also no secret that Chicago’s SAG leadership is primarily made up of a definite AFTRA First support Group.
The following ad is indicative of the brazen duplicity of a Select AFTRA leadership that keeps vote totals, not only, from its membership, but also from their elected board members. The same select group that basically bribed broadcasters to vote in an actor’ referendum, even if they had never worked the contract, because it would increase their pension and health.
But, but….don’t forget folks, AFTRA does not endorse political candidates or parties, right?
Look, no matter your political affiliations or preferences, there is one thing for certain; there is no quicker way to split our union’s membership apart than to start using member’s dues money to endorse political candidates and parties.
SAG’s NED Doug Allen and President Alan Rosenburg need to speak out against this violation of SAG policy--and whomever is responsible for this ad needs to be fired. Also, SAG should seriously consider severing its relationship with AFTRA, at least in Chicago, and independently service SAG members in that area.
