*alert New York USAN/SAG Board’s Cutting swipe at SAG and the NEC !!

.: .
Date: Friday 6/13/2008

New York AFTRA Board Member, Anne Gartlan, put the following post on the SAG Actor Bulleting board.

Statement from New York members of the SAG Board

Statement from New York members of the SAG Board

The New York members of the Screen Actors Guild Board of Directors unanimously disavow the decision of SAG’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to mount a campaign to persuade AFTRA/SAG dual-card holders to vote “no” on the AFTRA Primetime TV Contract.

This unprecedented action should only have been considered by the full National Board of Directors, which is charged with the responsibility of setting policy for the Guild. We are amazed that the National Executive Director and the President chose, instead, to bring this proposal to the much smaller and less representative NEC, over the objections of nearly half of the NEC members present. There was absolutely no reason that a full Board meeting could not have been called.

More importantly, the NY Board opposes this unconscionable attempt to interfere with the internal business of a sister union because it has no strategic value for our negotiations, because it will waste $150,000 of the members’ dues money, because it may result in costly legal battles for the Guild and because it will forever tarnish our image as a union.

We feel strongly that AFTRA members have the right to decide for themselves whether this contract is acceptable, without interference from any outside organization, and we believe it is imperative that SAG leadership focus on our on-going negotiations with the AMPTP and not divert any more time, energy or dues money to attacking a union upon which 45,000 of its own members depend.

It’s like the Ol' Dog has been telling you, these are AFTRA Operatives in SAG Clothing. They have no loyalty to SAG, and only care about AFTRA and themselves.

They boycotted SAG's solidarity rally. If you check their history, you'll find that, they in fact, hate anything Hollywood. They are jealous, and have consolidated with AFTRA's leadership to controll SAG contracts and facilitate their go-along-to-get-along agendas.

Look, SAG has a right to protect its dual card members, no matter how it upsets the anti SAG New York turncoat faction.

It is irrefutable that the AFTRA agreement, with all its concessions, is being used by the AMPTP to gain the same concessions from SAG, just as the DGA rollover was used against the WGA, and both of those are being used against SAG’s negotiators.

The irony here is this renegade New York faction of AMPTP/AFTRA sycophants complains that SAG could waste $150,000 dollars blocking this “deal,” while they had no compunction about wasting your dues money in a failed challenge of the election of Alan Rosenberg, $700,000 dollars on their failed ATA/NATR referendum, and, an admitted to, Two and a half million dollars on their failed CONsolidation campaign.

Yes, AFTRA members, have a right to make a decision on this referendum, but they also have a right to be told the truth about what’s in the agreement, and that is not going to happen with the AFTRA Star-less Chamber running things.

Hell, they won’t even allow their own board members have a copy of this agreement, for fear it will get out, to be scrutinized by those who will actually be voting on it.

They are fearful that the membership will, actually, get a chance to read an actual copy of it, before receiving with their ballots, AFTRA’s sanitized and fantasized summary version!

As for those 44,000 dual card members that depend on AFTRA…they have, long since, learned that the only thing they can depend on, is for the AFTRA Leadership to screw them both ethically and financially.

Remember if the AFTRA contract is voted up, your right to consent of your clips, will be voted down! This is because consent at the time of original employment, is no consent at all--and could lead to blacklisting of uncooperative actors.

Our SAG predecessors had first hand experiences with such activity by employers. Perhaps, that’s why they insisted on the following language in SAG’s 1960 contract with employers.

“Bargaining shall occur prior to the time such reuse is made, but performer may not agree to such reuse at the time of original employment.” (provision 22)

This is just one more reason to vote NO on AFTRA’s Exhibit A sellout of actors.
