* In pique of pettiness, AFTRA’s Leadership snubs SAG’s Hollywood membership!

.: .
Date: Friday 1/25/2008

At a time that AFTRA’s leadership has angered SAG actors by low-balling their contracts and giving away their residuals, it has added insult to injury by showing its total distain for SAG’s more than 50,000 Hollywood members with the release of the following email.

So, let’s get this straight. At the same time that AFTRA’s leadership claims entitlement to a 50/50 say in SAG’s Primetime/Theatrical contracts (even though it only has a couple of shows affected), it snubs Hollywood,an entire branch of the Screen Actors Guild, the representatives elected by the membership of that branch, and by the way, the membership that actually works the contracts to be negotiated. (By contrast, the chair of AFTRA's negotiating team, Roberta Reardon, has zero IMDB credits, and, in fact, has nothing at stake in the outcome, since she has never worked under the contracts being negotiated.)

The AFTRA email with its invitation excluding SAG Hollywood while inviting SAG NY and the branches, can leave little doubt about what I’ve been telling you for quite a while: The USAN leadership in New York and the Branches are AFTRA operatives in SAG clothing. (And since when did SAG NY and the Branches become an organization unto itself, a seperate entity from the Screen Actors Guild? Just because it acts like one that doesn't make it one.)

Well, AFTRA can snub Hollywood’s membership to their hearts content. I’m sure the membership will return the favor in the upcoming Phase One referendum by reaffirming that SAG’s contracts should be determined by SAG negotiators--without meddling from AFTRA, an organization, that has already demonstrated it propensity to sell out actors with inferior contracts and residual giveaways.
