While actors wait for SAG’s leadership to do something about AFTRA poaching SAG’s jurisdiction, they do nothing as if frozen by fear.
Well, like they say in this town never let them see you sweat. As our leaders stand there in puddles of sudorferous overflow, the lowballing predators at AFTRA continue to satisfy their voracious appetites by swallowing up SAG’s contracts. And in the meantime, SAG’s Global Rule One, is being made null and void by AFTRA’s Gobble Rule Too.
For a while, AFTRA’s opportunist seem to be content to limiting their poaching with its inferior minimums and residual giveaways, to half-hour shows. Embolden by SAG’s timidity they moved into one hour shows, and now they have taken the final big step, they have moved into SAG’s former, exclusive movie territory. And still not a ripple in those salty puddles.
Yep, they are now making their jurisdictional claim on feature films while major cinemas chains are converting to digital. What are our leaders doing?
“Could we get a mop over here?”
Look, not only is AFTRA screwing actors individually, but the Screen Actors Guild as a whole. And they are doing it by giving employers a convenient way to avoid SAG’s Global Rule One. They simply proclaim that theirs is an AFTRA Production, and voila, a Screen Actors’ Guild member is no longer working under a SAG contract, but an AFTRA contract. Well, maybe? How does that work anyway? AFTRA has no Global Rule One. Whatever the deal you can bet actors are getting screwed and Global Rule One will shortly be a thing of the past unless something is done fast.
What can actors do? Well, for one thing you need to let our leadership know that you are tired of their inaction. You do not want to work for a union like AFTRA where you work a job, and only later find out you have no residuals.
How, can SAG help you NOW! Well, the first thing SAG can do is enforce Global Rule One, Globally. By that I mean here in the USA! If SAG can enforce its jurisdiction in Canada, telling its members they must work under a SAG contract instead of an ACTRA contract, why can’t they do the same thing here in the USA!
ENFORCE GLOBAL RULE ONE IN THE USA!
The minute that they inform employers that SAG members can’t work any contracts under SAG’s jurisdiction anywhere in the world, including the USA, without a SAG contract, the problem will be solved.
Without access to SAG members to work these contracts, AFTRA is out of the poaching business, our leadership can dry up those puddles, and actors can get back to the business of making motion pictures without the fear that some scavenger union will feed off their minimums and residuals. (Does anyone have any doubt that under AFTRA and IATSE’s new alliance Kim and Tom are already licking their chops on how they can divvy up the spoils after they bring down the Screen Actors Guild. Come on do you think Ol’ Tom is satisfied with just animation writers. Yeah, right!)
What about dual cardholders? Well for the time being, if AFTRA’s leadership behaves itself, they can still work soaps, voice-over radio, or any other job that SAG determines does not necessarily fall under SAG’s jurisdiction.
On the other hand, if AFTRA leaders do not behave themselves they may find that those areas will shortly be under SAG’s domain. Come on, Kim, let's face it Soaps are no longer done in the manner of a live broadcast.
Of course, if and when that happens, AFTRA could always try and organize CNN, Fox News, CNBC, and MSNBC. Hey, all they have to do is convince their how profile broadcasters like Larry King, Brian Williams and the rest to stop working non-union.
