SAG JOINS THE WORLD COMMUNITY IN SYMPATHY FOR HAITI

Los Angeles (January 13, 2010) ¡Screen Actors Guild joins the world community in extending its deepest sympathies to the Haitian people.

Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck their island on Tuesday," said Screen Actors Guild President Ken Howard. This tragedy reminds us, no matter where we call home, that the human struggle is a shared one.

Many of our members are taking action and providing assistance to the people of Haiti. The Guild encourages our members to give to the relief agency of your choice during this time of need.

SUGGESTED RELIEF AGENCIES

Doctors Without Borders
Partners in Health
Red Cross International Response Fund You can also send the Red Cross International Response Fund a $10 donation by texting Haiti to 90999. The money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti.
RN Response Network
Solidarity Center Education Fund
United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund

I'll warn you ahead of time. You'll have to do a bit of searching to find it.

But, anyway, good for our president. It is unfortunate that SAG can't do more,(Can it?) but at least we have acknowledged this tragedy and have provided our members who want to make a donation a method to do so.

I have heard from a lot of our readers who have provided links. Most of which coincide with those posted on the SAG website.

Thanks to all of you.

An Open letter to SAG President Ken Howard:

Dear President Howard

Our neighbors in Haiti have suffered a devastating earthquake of unfathomable proportions. It has happened just 90 miles off our coast. In that regard, I would hope you could stand at the forefront in leading our membership in an effort to help SAG and its membership in coming together to the aid of the people of Haiti.

Unfortunately, about the only time others hear about our great union is when it is involved in some sort of labor strife involving political infighting or labor unrest. The misperception, many around the country have about actors, is that they are a rich spoiled, self-centered group, who only care about themselves. We know this is untrue: actors are some of the most giving, generous folks in world.

As our leader, you have the opportunity to demonstrate this is not true. SAG needs to do its part by joining in what is a worldwide effort to help alleviate the suffering that is now going on in Haiti.

For starters, SAG needs to reach out to our 120,000 members with information on how they can do their part. SAG should post on our website an article that will link up to a place where they can make a donation.

You have stated that you will coordinate with our fellow unions on how to get a better deal in upcoming negotiations with our employers. How about coordinating with them on how to come together in a joint effort to help the people of Haiti?

Look organizations are already starting to come forward with help. The New York Yankees just donated $500,000 dollars. Now I understand SAG could not donate such a sum, but our union and industry has some of the most recognizable talented people in the world. Why not organize a benefit? Maybe we can't donate a lot of money, but surely we could organize our high profile members in a such an effort. They came forward after 9/11 and I'm sure they would be happy to participate in such a humanitarian endeavor.

It would be nice to see our guild members portrayed in the media as a "giving" group, rather than one that only wants to "take."

The Ol' Dog has been pursuing the various union websites and there is not a single mention of the Haiti catastrophe on any of them, or, for that matter, on our employers website.

Thanks to all the folks who responded to my last post on this subject, and especially to the one who gave me the link to the following website where I could make a small donation to the Haiti Relief.¡± With the Ol' credit card. It takes only a few minutes.

https://american.redcross.org/site/Donation2?4306.donation=form1&idb=1322814429&df_id=4306&JServSessionIdr004=ebp52zvcu2.app196b

If you have any other such sites, email them to me and I will try and post them.

Okay, it's time for moi to get off the Ol' soap box. Yes, it's post time. *toast
