As SAG’s leadership stands by and does nothing, AFTRA continues on its mission to destroy the Screen Actors Guild by poaching more and more SAG shows—and usurping its jurisdiction.
They started with cable, and when they met no resistance from either our SAG leadership or membership, they moved on to network shows where they affectively took them over by signing a sweetheart deal with the AMPTP undermining SAG negotiations—and, by doing so with the help of SAG’s current AFTRA/AMPTP First leadership, they guaranteed the passage of the USAN/UFS “Work For Food” TV/Theatrical contract; a contract that will go down as the Worst Contract in SAG’s history.
In the meantime, SAG continues to feed off actors by signing inferior contracts with employers, ever willing to cut corners, even if it means doing their part to destroy the once great Screen Actors Guild.
Like, I said using predatory methods involving undercutting SAG rates, residuals, and protections, AFTRA has moved from cable to network and now onto features.
The latest is a feature called “Wrong Turn at Tahoe” starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Harvey Kietel, and Miguel Ferrer. The $3.5 million dollar feature shot in Spokane, Washington wrapped in April and, although its producers had hoped for a theatrical release, the AFTRA feature will be released by Paramount, directly to video in September.
So, as AFTRA’s leadership, with the help of its USAN/UFS operatives, continues to play the victim with their cries of abuse by SAG, they, also continue to be the willing tools of our employers--while they sell out the membership to the lowest bidder.
As for the distinguished cast, why would they work on an AFTRA feature? The Ol’ Dog has learned that they didn’t know the feature was AFTRA until they were told after they showed up on location.
